How to Identify Your Amazon Fire TV Model & Generation

Amazon has released over a dozen different Fire TV models since 2014, and almost all of them look like identical black plastic sticks. Here is how to find your exact generation, RAM capacity, and 4K playback capability in under 60 seconds.

Method 1: Check On-Screen System Settings (Recommended)

The easiest method is reading the system identifier directly from your television screen:

  1. Turn on your television and go to the Fire TV Home Screen.
  2. Navigate to the gear icon (Settings) on the far right.
  3. Select My Fire TV (or Device & Software on older builds).
  4. Click About.
  5. Look at the first line on the right-hand panel: it explicitly displays your model name, such as Fire TV Stick 4K Max or Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen).

Method 2: Physical Model Number on the Plastic Casing

If your device won't power on, unplug the stick from the HDMI port and examine the tiny laser-etched text on the plastic shell. Match the 4-character model code against this table:

Model CodeMarketing NameYearStorage / RAM
KDM9Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen)202316GB Storage / 2GB RAM
M3N6RAFire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen)20218GB Storage / 2GB RAM
E9L29YFire TV Stick 4K (1st Gen)20188GB Storage / 1.5GB RAM
S3L46NFire TV Stick (3rd Gen HD)20208GB Storage / 1GB RAM
S4E54NFire TV Stick Lite20208GB Storage / 1GB RAM

3. Why Does Your Model Matter for 4K Streaming?

Older 1st and 2nd Gen Firesticks lack the hardware decoding necessary for 50fps UK broadcast feeds, resulting in dropped frames and audio desync. Furthermore, units with only 1GB of RAM struggle when navigating extensive EPG channel listings. Upgrading to a 4K Max model provides instantaneous channel switching and quad-core headroom.
