How to Change Subtitles on a Smart TV: Samsung, LG, Firestick & Android
Struggling to enable closed captions or adjust tiny subtitle text on your television? Here is how to activate and style subtitles across all major television brands and streaming media player applications.
1. Activating Subtitles Inside Media Players
When streaming via dedicated IPTV applications, subtitles are controlled inside the player interface rather than the television's global menu:
In TiviMate:
Press Down on your remote during video playback. Navigate to the CC / Subtitle icon. Choose between available broadcast tracks (e.g. English [DVB] or Teletext). In Settings → Subtitles, you can adjust font size, color (yellow/white), and outline thickness.
In IPTV Smarters Pro:
Tap the center Select button, then click the small speech bubble icon located at the bottom-right of the control bar. Select the preferred subtitle stream.
In IBO Player (Samsung & LG):
Press the green button on your remote control during playback to toggle subtitles on or off instantly.
2. Television System-Wide Accessibility Settings
Samsung Smart TV (Tizen)
Hold the volume button down for 2 seconds to launch the Accessibility Shortcuts menu. Toggle Caption to ON. Select Caption Settings → Caption Mode → Default / Service 1.
LG Smart TV (webOS)
Press the gear icon on Magic Remote, go to All Settings → Accessibility → Subtitles. Toggle to ON and choose your preferred primary language (English).
3. Why Are Subtitles Missing on Some Channels?
Unlike pre-recorded VOD movies, live broadcast streams require subtitle streams to be transcoded and multiplexed into the transport stream in real-time. If a live channel lacks subtitles:
- The upstream broadcaster may not have broadcast closed captions for that specific live segment.
- Your player's video decoder may be stripping DVB bitmap graphics. Switch from Hardware to Software decoder to force text rendering.
